Meanwhile, Back on Monster Island

Hey, it's been awhile. Here, have a cartoon.

For some reason, I decided to get a DeviantART account. Hopefully I won't be bitten by the Anime Virus and draw nothing but Naruto fan art from now on. We'll see!

The Perfect Gift for the Holiday Season

Sustainability Unpacked: Food, Energy and Water for Resilient Environments and Societies has finally been released, and I'm holding a copy of it in my hands right now. I can't tell you how excited I am.

(I didn't do the cover though)

I was contacted by Maura Shelton in September of 2009. Kriistina A. Vogt, a professor at the University of Washington, and her team were looking for someone to do illustrations for her upcoming book on environmental sustainability. By chance, Maura saw my cartoons in The Daily, and contacted me. I met with Kriistina, Maura and the team, and was impressed by their enthusiasm and kindness.

The next few weeks were a blur of sketching, pitching ideas, re-drawing, pitching again, and finally creating the finished drawings. I won't lie, I felt like I was in over my head a couple of times at the sheer amount of work that went into this project, but I never forgot what a great opportunity it was.

Looking at the book now, it brings back all those memories, and over the next week or so I hope to share them with you guys. So I'll be posting sketches, alternate drawings, unused drawings, and other odds and ends.

I want to thank again Maura Shelton and Kriistina A. Vogt for letting in on this amazing opportunity. It's something I'll always be grateful for.

Gay Cat People Being Gay on Planet Gay Cat

Here's a strip in honor of James Cameron's latest jazzerbration, "Avatar."

"Avatar's" a lot of fun, and features a number of masterfully filmed sequences and events. The movie's pure sci-fi pulp, but it's pulp done by a guy who loves it more than anyone else. You'll have a better time at this than a number of movies that are supposedly "good for you."

Plus there's a scene where a giant robot wields a knife while fighting an alien. That's why cinema was invented.

And So It Begins

I suppose it's about time I entered the bloggosphere. Let's start with some stuff I submitted to the Jacob Lawrence Gallery's "2D or 3D" show.

Sharp eyed viewers will note that this used to be my Facebook avatar a year or two ago. When I was looking for things to submit, I found this image, and when you take it out of context, it looks super-pretentious. Which I thought the judges might go for.

This was originally going to be an ad for my comic strip, "No Exit Nearby" (seen every week in "The Daily!"), which I modified to make it more of an art piece. Yes, that is "Xavier: Renegade Angel" in one the photos on the wall.

Neither piece was accepted into the show, though I like to imagine the judges got into a heated argument over the merits of my pieces. And isn't that what art's all about anyway?

Plus, now I can advertise my strip as "Too good for the Jacob Lawrence Gallery."
